I bought the Nike+iPod then. I got about 25 runs logged since then.

Early on it was very accurate out of the box. I was running on a course about 3.2 miles. I compared the Nike+iPod to both Google Earth/Maps, and my bike's odometer as standards. The bike's odometer is calibrated by my measurement of the circumference of the front wheel of the bike. There is an excellent correlation between the bike's odometer and Google Maps, under 1% difference. Out of the box, the Nike+iPod was accurate within a tenth of a mile. I then calibrated my Nike+iPod at an all weather high school track both walking and running. It actually made the calibration worse - it was now reading 3.5 miles instead of 3.2. I have since upped my runs to exactly four miles, and my pace has improved. Just lately I deleted the calibration and returned to default settings. Now the Nike+iPod reads 3.7 miles consistently on the 4 mile run.

It would be nice to figure out the binary code in the Calibration File stored in the ipod. I could change it to match my run. Opening it in Notepad brings up random symbols, it doesn't seem to be in ASCII code.

Here is a great page describing the inner workings of the Nike+iPod. I learned it would be tough to replace the battery. I also learned that it only measures footstrike frequency and duration, and estimates distance from this.

One of the problems with my run is that the first 2 miles go up a 220 foot hill, then the second 2 miles I run back down. To figure out altitude, you just can't beat US Geological Survey Quadrangle maps (1:24000 scale). GPS can't beat their accuracy. These maps are hand drawn using stereo aerial photos, and are accurate within 10 feet. I suspect Google Earth gets their altitude data from these surveys. I think running up or down a hill affects one's stride length and foot strike, deviating from the calibration.

I use the Nike+iPod to tell me relative pace, but I use maps to measure distance. I just bought a Garmin GPS, but I haven't run with it. It's kind of bulky.

Thanks a lot Rich for your great information.

Newbie here

hi guys i'm newbie here specially with runometer.

what does that mean all about.

i got confused specially with the logo a shoe.

Great Tool!!!

Hey hrish thanks for the quick response also, I changed the TZ in my profile but as you said the runs are not updated with that.
